UK flyers demand healthier in-flight meals—but airlines ignore the call
UK air travellers are pushing for healthier in-flight meals, but airlines have yet to respond. A recent survey by dnata reveals strong demand for wellness-focused food and drink options, from hydrating beverages to protein-rich dishes. Despite this, none of the country's major carriers have updated their menus to reflect these preferences.
Nearly half of UK flyers now prioritise wellness more than they did five years ago. The shift is particularly noticeable among younger passengers, who are driving demand for better choices. Over 40% have already replaced alcoholic drinks with juices or vitamin-infused alternatives while flying.
A significant portion of travellers want specific changes to their in-flight meals. Hydrating options, such as electrolyte water, top the list for 53% of respondents. Meanwhile, 45% are calling for more protein-rich dishes, and 46% prefer low-calorie or portion-controlled meals. Low-sugar and low-carb options also rank high, with 50% of flyers seeking these alternatives.
Fresh, minimally processed ingredients are another key request, backed by 56% of those surveyed. Some passengers are even willing to pay extra for meals that support gut health or immunity—19% would do so without hesitation.
Yet, despite the clear demand, no major British airline has introduced new wellness-focused menus on domestic or long-haul flights. The gap between traveller expectations and airline offerings remains unaddressed.
The survey highlights a growing trend: UK flyers are increasingly health-conscious when it comes to in-flight dining. With younger travellers leading the charge, airlines face rising pressure to update their menus. Until changes are made, passengers may continue seeking alternatives—or paying more for meals that meet their wellness needs.
