VA Allocates $112M to Combat Veteran Suicides Through Community Grants

The US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has announced a major funding boost for veteran suicide prevention. A total of $112 million in grants will support organisations helping at-risk veterans and their families. The money comes from the Staff Sergeant Parker Gordon Fox Suicide Prevention Grant Program (SSG Fox SPGP).

Since 2022, the initiative has already distributed $210 million to 111 groups across 46 states, US territories, and tribal lands.

The SSG Fox SPGP honours Parker Gordon Fox, an Army veteran who took his own life in 2020 at the age of 25. The programme funds community-based services for veterans in crisis, including counselling, outreach, and mental health support.

In 2025 alone, these grants assisted over 17,000 veterans, service members, and family members. Nearly 9,000 of them were identified as being at high risk of suicide. The effort has also encouraged more veterans to seek help—over 2,500 enrolled in VA healthcare for the first time last year after engaging with Fox-funded programmes.

Eligible organisations range from nonprofits and local governments to tribal groups. All must demonstrate the ability to serve veterans effectively. The need remains urgent: in 2023, 6,398 veterans died by suicide, an average of 17 per day. While this figure marks a decrease compared to 14 of the past 15 years, the VA continues to expand prevention efforts.

The latest $112 million in grants will build on existing suicide prevention work. Funded services will target veterans most in need, while also connecting them to long-term VA care.
