Vancouver's Granville Bridge suicide barriers stall despite urgent pleas from advocates

Calls for suicide prevention barriers on Vancouver’s Granville Street Bridge have grown louder after a recent police incident. Mental health advocates and residents are pushing the city to take action, citing the success of similar barriers on the Burrard Street Bridge. The project, however, still lacks confirmed funding despite years of discussion.

The need for fencing on the Granville Bridge was first identified years ago, with cost estimates ranging from $10 million to $20 million. While barriers on the Burrard Street Bridge have prevented suicides since their installation over a decade ago, progress on Granville has stalled. Funding for the project was even removed from the city’s latest capital plan in March.

Council has instructed staff to move forward with design work for the barriers, but no construction funds have been secured. Tom Lancaster, general manager of Granville Island, continues to advocate for the project, urging the city to make it a priority. Stacy Ashton of the Crisis Centre of B.C. supports the push, stating that barriers are a proven way to stop impulsive actions and save lives. Mayor Ken Sim responded to the recent incident by expressing condolences and confirming that the city is reviewing options. Despite the delays, pressure from advocates and the community remains strong.

Without confirmed funding, the barriers remain in the planning stage. The city must now decide how to proceed, balancing budget constraints with the urgent need for suicide prevention. If approved, the project could follow the proven success of barriers on other Vancouver bridges.
