Vienna's New Nursing Training Hub Opens to Combat Care Worker Shortage
A new training centre for nursing and care professions has reopened in Vienna's Alsergrund district. Located on Seegasse, the facility is run by Caritas and aims to tackle the growing shortage of skilled workers in social and healthcare roles. The centre will provide a mix of vocational education, practical training, and further qualifications for future carers. The reopened centre offers a variety of programmes, including vocational schools, hands-on training, and continuing education in nursing and social care. Its launch comes as Austria faces a pressing need for more care workers, with projections showing a demand for up to 75,000 additional staff by 2030. In Vienna alone, around 9,000 new workers will be required.
Caritas Director Klaus Schwertner highlighted the urgent need for action, stressing that the facility is a direct response to the skills gap. He also called for political measures to raise the status of care professions, arguing that nursing training should receive the same recognition as economic and technical fields. Without better incentives and societal appreciation, attracting and keeping talent in the sector will remain difficult. Schwertner further emphasised that improving working conditions and public perception of care roles is essential. The centre's programmes aim to equip trainees with the skills needed for a sector under increasing pressure.
The Seegasse training centre is now operational, offering structured pathways into nursing and social care. Its opening addresses a critical labour shortage, but long-term solutions will depend on broader political and societal changes. Caritas has urged authorities to treat care training as a priority equal to other professional fields.
