Vietnamese hospital pioneers laser surgery for bile duct stones

Buôn Ma Thuột University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital in Đắk Lắk Province has introduced a new method for treating bile duct stones. The technique involves cutting stones through a transhepatic tunnel using a laser. It recently won first prize in the provincial Contest of Technical Innovation for 2024-2025. The hospital began using the laser transhepatic tunnel lithotripsy method to dissolve percutaneous bile duct stones. So far, around 100 cases have been treated with this approach. It achieves a stone removal rate of over 95% and shortens hospital stays to just two or three days. The technique also reduces the need for repeat surgeries and showcases advancements in medical innovation.

In addition to this, the hospital has adopted the submucosal dissection (ESD) technique for early gastrointestinal cancer treatment since 2023. To support training, they developed a gastric endoscopy simulation model. This model won third prize in the same innovation contest. The hospital’s efforts highlight its commitment to scientific and technological progress in healthcare. These innovations provide more effective treatment options for patients. They also contribute to the rapid and sustainable development of medical services in the region.
