Vitamin E remains a key nutrient in pet food, but its role is now better understood through modern research. Guidelines from organisations like the National Research Council and AAFCO set requirements, while studies highlight its benefits—and limits—in dogs, cats, and even horses. Recent findings show how it interacts with other antioxidants and why balance matters more than high doses.

The National Research Council lists vitamin E needs in milligrams of α-tocopherol for dogs and cats. Meanwhile, AAFCO uses international units per kilogram of dry matter, noting that pets eating diets rich in unsaturated fats require extra protection. Both approaches reflect vitamin E’s function as a free radical scavenger and cell membrane protector in animals.

Since 2007, studies have explored its effects alongside other antioxidants. A 2010 trial by Yu et al. found that dogs given vitamin E and selenium showed better resistance to oxidative stress. Four years later, Carvalho et al. reported improved immune function in cats supplemented with vitamin E and vitamin C. In 2020, Pereira et al. reviewed similar benefits in horses, where vitamin E combined with polyphenols reduced exercise-induced oxidative damage. Higher dietary vitamin E does boost circulating α-tocopherol levels, particularly in pets eating polyunsaturated fatty acids. Yet serum concentrations plateau at moderate doses, proving that excessive amounts offer little extra benefit. Processing methods like extrusion can also degrade vitamin E, so manufacturers often add safety margins beyond minimum requirements. Clinical results vary by condition. Dogs with atopic dermatitis saw improved antioxidant status and symptoms after supplementation. However, the same approach did not consistently help dogs with osteoarthritis or cats with chronic kidney disease. The European Pet Food Industry Federation’s updated guidelines now stress precise, evidence-based inclusion rather than assuming more is always better. Vitamin E works best alongside other antioxidants, such as vitamin C, to strengthen oxidative protection. This synergy has led to more tailored formulations in modern pet nutrition.

Current guidelines and research confirm vitamin E’s importance in pet diets, but with clearer limits. Studies show its value in specific conditions and when paired with other antioxidants, while also proving that excessive doses provide no added advantage. The focus now lies on optimising levels to protect both animal health and food quality without unnecessary over-supplementation.
