Weekends@MIT fosters community with 20 years of student-led fun

Weekends@MIT has been offering students a chance to unwind and connect for over 20 years. The initiative, run by students for students, hosts substance-free activities every Friday and Saturday night. All events take place in the MIT Wellbeing Lab and welcome both undergraduates and postgraduates alike.

The programme began as a way to foster community on campus. Today, it remains student-driven, with ideas and planning coming directly from attendees. The Division of Student Life (DSL) provides guidance, funding, and logistical help, but the events themselves are shaped by student interests.

A team of ten Wellbeing Ambassadors leads the initiative. They organise a mix of activities, from craft nights and yoga sessions to trivia competitions and seasonal events like Spooky Skate. Many of these take place on Saturdays, often in partnership with student clubs that apply for funding to host their own gatherings. Attendance has been strong, particularly on Fridays. Last autumn, over 2,000 students dropped in at weekend events. Most activities are designed to be casual, allowing participants to join at any time. A weekly newsletter also keeps thousands of students informed about upcoming programs and other campus happenings. Looking ahead, the team wants to grow its reach. Plans include deeper collaborations with student groups and fresh ideas to bring even more people together on weekends.

Weekends@MIT continues to provide a space for relaxation and connection outside of academic life. With steady participation and ongoing student involvement, the initiative remains a long-standing part of campus culture. Organisers are now focused on broadening partnerships and introducing new ways to engage the community.
