Why Omega-3 Fatty Acids Are Essential for Brain and Heart Health

Omega-3 fatty acids play a vital role in maintaining good health, yet the human body cannot produce them on its own. These essential nutrients must come from food or supplements. Recent research has also highlighted their potential benefits for brain function, particularly in children and those with attention difficulties.

Omega-3s form a family of fatty acids, including EPA, DHA, and ALA. DHA, in particular, supports brain, skin, and eye health, while EPA helps reduce inflammation and regulate blood sugar. These fats also assist in absorbing other fat-soluble nutrients, such as vitamins A, E, D, and K.

A deficiency in omega-3s can lead to noticeable symptoms, including dry skin, irritated eyes, joint discomfort, and changes in hair texture. Pregnant and nursing women especially need enough omega-3s, as they aid fetal and infant brain development. Studies have shown mixed results over the years, but newer research suggests clearer benefits. A 2022 review in *The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition* found modest improvements in attention and memory among children aged 4–12 after analysing 15 recent trials. Another 2023 study in *Nutrients* reported stronger effects on ADHD symptoms compared to earlier, inconsistent findings. For heart health, omega-3s may lower triglycerides and boost HDL cholesterol. The American Heart Association advises eating two portions of fatty fish each week to meet requirements. Those struggling to do so can turn to supplements like fish oil or algal oil as alternatives.

Omega-3 fatty acids remain essential for overall health, from brain function to heart protection. Without them, the body cannot perform optimally, and deficiencies can lead to noticeable problems. For those unable to get enough from diet alone, supplements offer a practical solution.
