Why Your Leg Pain and Visible Spider Veins Demand Medical Attention

Many people dismiss leg pain as a normal part of getting older, but experts warn it could signal a deeper issue. Spider veins, often seen as a cosmetic concern, may actually point to underlying venous disease. Left untreated, the condition can worsen over time, affecting daily comfort and mobility.

Spider veins, medically called telangiectasias, usually appear when larger reticular veins beneath the skin malfunction. These visible veins often indicate chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), a condition where blood pools in the legs instead of flowing back to the heart. Classic symptoms include persistent aching, heaviness, throbbing, or night-time discomfort—especially in those aged 30 to 50.

In Germany, around 25% of women and 20% of men suffer from CVI, with older adults facing higher risks. While compression socks can ease symptoms, they don't repair damaged vein valves. Similarly, supplements and creams offer little help for structural vein problems.

Doctors caution against treating only the visible spider veins without addressing the root cause. Ignoring venous disease can lead to worsening symptoms, including restless legs syndrome. Proper diagnosis and treatment of the underlying issue often bring significant relief.

Experts urge anyone experiencing leg pain or visible veins not to dismiss the symptoms. Self-diagnosis or surface-level fixes may delay effective treatment. Early medical evaluation can prevent complications and improve long-term leg health.
