Wolfgang Grupp: Depression is gone - Wolfgang Grupp's emotional exit from Trigema after 55 years at the helm

Wolfgang Grupp, the long-time leader of German clothing brand Trigema, stepped down as CEO in early 2024. The 82-year-old entrepreneur, who built the company into a well-known name for 'Made in Germany' underwear and sportswear, handed control to his two children. Since then, his life has taken unexpected turns—both professionally and personally.

Grupp took over Trigema in 1969, transforming it into a brand synonymous with German-made casual wear, underwear, and sportswear. For over five decades, he shaped the company's identity, emphasising local production and family values. His children, Bonita and Wolfgang Jr., had long been involved in the business, preparing for the eventual transition.

In January 2024, the handover became official. Bonita now oversees online sales, marketing, and human resources, while Wolfgang Jr. manages business-to-business operations, production, and finances. Their father remained in an advisory role, offering guidance without day-to-day control. Yet despite the smooth professional shift, the change left Grupp struggling with a deep sense of loss.

The void he felt grew overwhelming. In the months following his resignation, he attempted suicide, later attributing the act to severe depression. He has since expressed regret over the decision, stating he would never repeat it. Now, he spends his days back in the office, contributing where he can, and working on his biography.

Family remains central to his life. His daughter lives next door, and he sees his grandchild daily—a small but steady source of comfort amid the upheaval. Meanwhile, Trigema continues as before, with no reported changes to its strategic direction or international presence under the new leadership.

Wolfgang Grupp's departure from Trigema marked the end of an era for the company. His children have taken on full responsibility, maintaining the brand's established path. For Grupp himself, the transition has brought both reflection and a gradual return to work, though his personal journey remains deeply tied to the business he built.
