First Responders in Fire Incident: "One Just Functions Then" - Young heroes save lives in Chemnitz nursing home fire tragedy

Six young people attending a seminar in Chemnitz sprang into action when a fire broke out in a nearby nursing home. Their quick response helped evacuate residents and limit the damage, though one elderly man tragically died in the blaze.

The group had gathered in the city for a training event when they heard a fire alarm and spotted smoke billowing from the building. Without hesitation, they rushed to assist. Two stayed outside to guide the fire brigade, while the others entered the nursing home to help move residents to safety.

Clemens Michael, who had prior experience as a volunteer firefighter, tackled the flames on the second floor. Maja Feil and the rest of the team focused on evacuating those inside, transferring them to wheelchairs and relocating them to secure areas. Their efforts came after completing emergency medical responder (EMR) training with the German Red Cross in Saxony. Despite their intervention, an 84-year-old man lost his life in the fire. Seven others suffered injuries, with three requiring hospital treatment. The cause of the fire remains unknown. The German Red Cross later commended the young responders for their bravery and confirmed they were receiving emotional support after the incident.

The experience has reinforced the group's determination to work in emergency services. Their training and quick thinking played a crucial role in preventing further loss of life. Authorities continue to investigate the fire's origin.
