A 2025 review in Sports Medicine has cast doubt on the superiority of Zone 2 training for boosting fitness. This low-to-moderate intensity approach, once hailed as a breakthrough, shows no clear edge over higher-intensity workouts for improving heart health or metabolism. The findings challenge a training method that gained wide popularity over the past decade.

Zone 2 cardio involves exercising at a pace that feels manageable—hard enough to count as a workout but easy enough to hold a conversation. While it offers benefits like better endurance and cellular muscle strength, researchers now argue that enjoyment and consistency matter more than intensity alone.

The concept of Zone 2 training first took off in cycling around 2010. Norwegian exercise physiologist Stephen Seiler promoted a 'polarized' approach, blending 80% low-intensity sessions with 20% high-intensity bursts. By 2012–2015, elite athletes in marathon running, triathlon, and cross-country skiing adopted the method, citing improvements in VO₂ max and race performance.

Norwegian biathletes and marathon runners, including Eliud Kipchoge's team, saw success with this split. The goal was to build endurance at a cellular level—enhancing mitochondrial function, fat metabolism, and cortisol balance. Yet, while effective for recovery and sustained effort, the 2025 review found no proof that Zone 2 outperforms higher-intensity training for general fitness gains.

For time-strapped athletes, shorter, harder sessions often deliver faster progress. The review emphasised that the best workout is the one people stick to. Regularly mixing intensity and duration, while adjusting to personal progress, remains key. Enjoyment and practicality, not rigid intensity zones, drive long-term results.

Zone 2 training does support muscle health and energy levels, but it isn't a shortcut for fat loss. Its benefits depend on how it fits into an individual's routine—not on inherent superiority over other methods.

The 2025 findings shift the focus from strict intensity zones to personal preference and sustainability. While Zone 2 training still holds value for endurance athletes, its advantages aren't universal. The most effective strategy remains the one that aligns with an individual's goals, schedule, and enjoyment—whether low, moderate, or high in intensity.
