US ramps up Middle East military presence as Iran tensions escalate
The US has stepped up its military presence in the Middle East over recent weeks. Troops, aircraft, and defence systems have been moved into the region, with over 250 cargo flights recorded. Tensions with Iran remain high as negotiations stall over uranium enrichment.
Since late January, 12 F-15 fighter jets have been stationed at Jordan's Muwaffaq Salti Air Base. Satellite images from February 2 also reveal eight A-10 Thunderbolt ground attack planes and four EA-18G Growler electronic warfare aircraft at the same location. Meanwhile, mobile HEMTT launchers carrying Patriot missiles have been prepared for rapid deployment at Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar.
US Air Force units based in the UK, including refuelling tankers and fighter jets, are now being repositioned closer to the Middle East. Several military units already in the region have had their deployments extended, though specific details on these extensions remain undisclosed. Dozens of cargo flights have delivered equipment to Jordan, Bahrain, and Saudi Arabia in recent weeks.
President Trump has repeatedly threatened military action against Iran, calling regime change the best possible outcome. However, US officials admit they lack a clear plan for what would follow if the Iranian government were removed. A major sticking point in negotiations remains Iran's uranium enrichment programme, which the US insists must stop entirely.
The buildup of US forces and air defence systems signals a continued focus on deterrence in the region. With over 250 cargo flights and extended troop deployments, military readiness has increased. The standoff over Iran's nuclear programme and the lack of a post-regime strategy leave key questions unresolved.
