Giovanni Mazzei's Ipsus Redefines Chianti Classico with Bold 2021 Sangiovese

Giovanni Mazzei has crafted Ipsus, a bold new Chianti Classico Gran Selezione made entirely from Sangiovese. The wine aims to showcase the true character of Chianti Classico's terroir while redefining its reputation. His 2021 vintage has already drawn praise for its depth and precision.

The project began at Il Caggio, a small estate acquired by Mazzei and his father in 2006. Since its first release in 2020, Ipsus has quickly become a standout among critics and collectors alike.

The Il Caggio estate spans just two hectares, sitting at elevations between 1,050 and 1,150 feet. Its deep, well-drained soils, steady breezes, and ideal sun exposure create perfect conditions for Sangiovese. Mazzei selected this site specifically to produce a wine that reflects its unique environment.

Ipsus 2021 was made using a meticulous approach. The vineyard is divided into tiny plots, each fermented separately to preserve purity and complexity. After fermentation in small batches, the wine aged in a mix of large oak barrels, smaller tonneaux, and ceramic vats.

The result is a rich, layered Chianti Classico. On the nose, it offers black cherry, violet petals, candied orange peel, and a faint touch of pencil lead. The palate delivers plush tannins, bright acidity, and flavours of Luxardo cherry, blackberry, lavender, and clove. Only 6,000 bottles were produced, making it a rare find.

Mazzei's vision goes beyond crafting an exceptional wine. He wants Ipsus to challenge perceptions and establish Chianti Classico as a world-class fine wine. The 2015 vintage marked the first step, but the 2021 release solidifies its growing reputation.

Ipsus 2021 stands as a testament to Mazzei's dedication to terroir and precision winemaking. With limited production and a distinctive profile, it reinforces Chianti Classico's potential on the global stage.
