Women face a far higher risk of injury in car crashes than men, even at the same collision speeds. Research shows that female passengers are more than twice as likely to suffer severe harm or die in accidents. Current safety systems, designed around male body standards, often fail to protect women effectively. Standard crash test dummies are based on the ‘average male’ body, with female versions simply being scaled-down adaptations. These models do not reflect key anatomical differences, such as bone density, muscle distribution, or torso shape. As a result, injury risks for women—particularly to the chest, spine, arms, and legs—are routinely underestimated.

Seatbelts and airbags are also optimised for a fixed, upright seating position. Many drivers and passengers, especially women, adjust their seats further back or in a reclined position, reducing the system’s effectiveness. Poor belt placement and incorrect seating height can worsen injuries during a crash.

Studies reveal that women are 1.6 times more likely to be injured than men when both sexes share the same vehicle. The disparity grows in more severe collisions, where female occupants suffer more extensive trauma. Adaptive technologies, such as belt-force limiters that adjust tension based on crash severity, occupant size, and seating position, could help close this gap. However, these solutions remain underdeveloped in mainstream vehicle safety designs. The reliance on male-centric safety standards leaves women vulnerable in collisions. Adjusting seat positions, improving belt fit, and adopting adaptive restraint systems could reduce injury severity. Without changes to testing and design, the risk disparity between male and female passengers is likely to persist.
