Teen leukemia survivor Victor Aponte returns to baseball after yearlong battle

Victor Aponte, a 16-year-old from Berks County, Pennsylvania, has returned to pitching after battling leukemia for over a year. His journey back to the field was made possible by the support of his baseball team, local community, and a former MLB pitcher who offered him a place to train during treatment. Fundraisers and a GoFundMe campaign helped cover his medical expenses, raising a total of $30,000. Victor first picked up a baseball at the age of six. By 14, he was competing in tournaments, but his passion for the game was suddenly interrupted. During a tournament, he fell seriously ill and was later diagnosed with leukemia. His first question after the diagnosis was whether he would ever play baseball again.

Throughout his chemotherapy, Victor’s teammates, Governor Mifflin High School, and the wider community rallied behind him. They organised fundraisers and events to lift his spirits and ease the financial burden. Rich Delucia, a former MLB pitcher, also stepped in, offering Victor a space to train and focus on recovery. The support didn’t stop there. EL1 Reading, a local baseball training company, set up a GoFundMe campaign that raised $30,000 for his medical costs. Victor now describes his team and community as a second family, crediting them for helping him through his toughest days. After more than a year of treatment, Victor finally returned to the pitcher’s mound. His experience has shaped his future goals—he now plans to play baseball in college while studying nursing, hoping to give back to others facing similar battles.

Victor’s return to baseball marks the end of a long and challenging recovery. The $30,000 raised through donations and the ongoing support from his community have given him a fresh start. He remains determined to pursue both his athletic and academic dreams, inspired by the kindness he received during his illness.
